Catching Up With Baby errr….BLUE!
By Kendell “Scady” Eugene

For those who don’t remember who Baby Blue is.

Baby Blue started 3 years ago, a young Leon Hess graduate who has set off on a musical journey ever since. He started recording music within the walls of his bedroom using basic programs. He kept on recording until he had two demos which he sent to his good friend Kendell Scady Eugene, who played on R.C.I. at the time, who also passed it to his friend Shem Pierre, who passed it to his brother Sirlancelot of the same radio station, and they both liked the songs, but thought that the recording quality could be improved. So Blue then went in search of a recording studio. It wasn’t until he was at Domino’s Pizza one Saturday night, and over-heard two individuals talking about a studio they just opened and they were interested in recording young artistes. Blue then got involved in the conversation introducing his self and sharing some of his ideas and booked a studio session the following Saturday with Johan Deterville of Studio 9 in Anse la Raye. There he recorded the two songs accompanied by his friend, Mr. Roots, who was featured on both tracks. The songs both had official radio releases along with a music video. After those releases more local producers showed interest and he was introduced to a producer Courtney Louis, by Kendell Scady Eugene. Blue was then featured on the summer hit riddim "Boom Boom" with a song titled “My Life.”

What has Blue been up to these days?

Since his last official release, Blue stated, the song was well received regionally and was very popular but he was not happy with the marketing and promotion of it and also himself as an artiste. So he decided to take time off to correct these mistakes and travelled to further improve his music ‘interims’ of song writing and his image. He then dropped the “Baby” from his name only kept the Blue and introduced himself to other genres of music to make his music more commercial and suitable for regional and international markets. He also stumbled upon a genre of music called ‘Island Pop’ among others in which he would like to introduce to the St. Lucian music industry.

What brought on the change in name and personality?

On his musical journey Blue was introduced to Jamaican dancehall artiste Bad Gyal Cecile by Courtney Louis. Louis then scheduled a meeting between the two in which Blue played her his tape; they both sat and listened. She said she liked every song on the tape and immediately started a music plan for him giving him more guidance on how to further improve his music and to portray him as a gentleman. She also introduced him to other Jamaican artistes in the process.

What has Blue learnt from the last time he was featured on the YO!

That patience and dedication goes a long way

“Your new music, where do you get the inspiration from?”

“My sweet island St. Lucia and wanting the world to know about it. Also me becoming a musical ambassador for my island.” That is where he gets the inspiration to make the music he makes. But song-writing inspiration comes from life itself, the simplest thing around him could trigger his thoughts to put together lyrics

“We heard you were in Jamaica, tell us about that experience.”

“Yes it was a wonderful experience to see how the music industry operates and to actually be in studio with artistes and see performances. Every second you tend to learn something, also the younger popular Jamaican artistes really accepted me as one of them such as Romain Virgo and Cheveaugn Clayton who were introduced to me by Jamaican/St.Lucian producer Johann Deterville.”

Tell us about the tracks you have released so far.

“‘Caribbean ladies’ and ‘Welcome To My Island,’ were both written by me and produced by Johann Deterville, the idea for the song came from Cecile. It’s a song representing all the “Caribbean ladies” who love to wine and have a good time. ‘Welcome To My Island’ was a song we put together to showcase our island St.Lucia and how beautiful it is mentioning most of the heritage sites, it is also a tribute to the late Amy Winehouse who found so much comfort here in fighting her addiction.”

“How soon can we expect an album or mixtape from you?”

“We will definitely have both coming next year but as to a date that is still open for discussion as we want to target the right time but the mixtape features several Jamaican artistes along with Canadian artistes.”

“Which producers and studios are you working with?”

“Johann Deterville, Studio 9, Nerdy & Wendell Barthelmy of Scouthouse Records Courtney Louis of Stratosphere Records. Also studios in Jamaica I won’t mention. I don’t want to spoil the surprises.”

“Who are your musical influences and who would you like to work with? “

“The Beatles, Micheal Jackson ,Chris Brown ,Cindy Lauper, Gloria Estefan, Frank Sinatra, Machel Montano, Beenie Man and Vybz Kartel. I would like to work with anybody who makes good music.”

“And finally what are your goals and how are you preparing yourself to achieve them all?”

“I would like to let the world know about me as an artiste and the island where I am from and for my music to reach its peak. Also I would like to develop the music industry in St.Lucia. I have already established two studios on the island and a record label called Scouthouse Records, scouting young, raw talent and ensuring a musical environment for them to showcase their skills in order to get an end product worth marketing and distributing into regional and international markets.”
