The Carnival festivities are practically over with the exception of events like Gros Islet Carnival. 2011 was another historic year for Saint Lucia as it relates to the Carnival Season and individuals who attended the various shows seemed to share that same thought.

In this article, we will attempt to give you full details of this year’s Power Soca Monarch Finals. Many artistes competed in the local event with the hopes of becoming winner but of course, only the best of the best could get the much deserved title. Amongst the many competitors were: Sir Lancealot, Teddyson John (T.J.), Superman H.D., DJ H.P, Private Six, Sedale Semei and Ricky T. Ricky T who is well known for his music in the Caribbean made a stunning impression this year. The “King of Soca” as described by many, grabbed all the titles in the events in which he participated. Ricky T also known as “Tizzle” was crowned King at the Groovy Soca Monarch, Power Soca Monarch and also took the Road March King title. At the Groovy Soca Monarch he won with his hit single “Indian Gyal” and at Power Soca he competed with the song “Mash up.” The name itself could not even begin to describe the way the “King” dominated at the event.

Ricky T was in total control of the crowd at all the events in which he participated especially at the Soca Monarch. The name of the song describes it all. The famous lines in the song “Mash up do a mad ting!” had the crowd doing exactly that. He was the leader that night and the crowd eagerly followed his instructions. “Wild, crazy, insanity, pure madness” cannot even begin to describe the way the artiste had the crowd. When he said “go left”, the crowd did just that, when he said “go right”, they did just that. When he said “go back”, they listened and when he said “now march up do a mad ting!” everybody went totally “insane!” The singer deserved his title as he gave a crowd pleasing performance.

Other artistes who also had control of the crowd were Super Man H.D., Teddyson John and Sir Lancealot. Although Sir Lancealot did not place, the singer was in total control of at least 60% of the crowd. He performed his song “Soca Riot” and the crowd came prepared so they could do just that. The well known lines in the song, “Water! Powder! Water! Powder” sent the crowd crazy. Several individuals walked along with their bottles of powder and water and the singer indeed created a Soca Riot because the crowd was getting on “absolutely mad!” with their water and powder and they were jumping up and down enjoying every bit of the singer’s performance.

The results were as follows: Teddyson John (T.J.) in 3rd place, Superman H.D. in second place and of course Ricky T, the champion of them all took home the crown along with his prizes. DJ H.P. who was the reigning King the previous year however did not place with his popular single “Drunkerneers”. Ricky T who joked earlier this year that he borrowed his friend DJ H.P’s crown apparently did just that, as he came back this year with singles that were guaranteed to give him the crown.
