Ambi- SOCA IS HIS AMBITION

Ambrose Dwayne Joseph comes from a family of entertainers, with his father and uncles professional dancers and his brother, popular Saint Lucian Soca entertainer Ricky T. But for Ambrose, christened “Ambi” by a good friend, when he decided to step up to the Soca plate, the time has come to make his own mark and carve out a niche for himself in the music circles.

“For a while now I have been interested in music and singing. At first I used to go around with my brother Ricky T and a couple of times I performed with him, but last year I decided I had to push myself further and I started writing some songs. Then I took part in Piton Soca Starz and joined a tent as well,” Ambi explains. The result of his interest and effort was a second place position in the Piton Soca Starz 2010 with a popular power Soca number called “Push Dem” and another called “So Long.” The young talent wrote both songs which were produced by Mathias.

The 2010 experience he says taught him a lot in preparation for 2011. “Right now I know for sure this is what I want to do and music and Soca have become my main ambition,” Ambi says. “Before this I was just on the block doing my thing free-styling on various rhythms and every year I would say, boy, I trying a ting for carnival, but when the time reach I would just back out,” he admits. “But last year, I really made up my mind to come out and this year I feel even stronger.”

Following his success last year at the Piton Soca Starz, Ambi was scouted by local producer Courtney Louis and the budding Soca artiste found a home in his Dutch Productions studios, since January of 2011. There, he and now performing partner Mongstar, who won the 2010 Piton Soca Starz started listening to various rhythms and writing songs ahead of the 2011 carnival season in Saint Lucia.

Ambi’s first release for 2011 is “Mas Mêlée” a Zouk-flavoured Groovy Soca number which features Mongstar. The song took off instantly, becoming one of the most requested songs on radio and embraced by young and old. Ambi placed fourth in the Groovy Soca Finals with that number. He later released “Mate’ Yo” which has also become a hot and very popular song at carnival fetes.

This year Ambi (along with Mongstar) performed all over the island particularly at all Piton Soca Starz events and at some of the major events for this year’s carnival.

His intention he says is just to embrace the music and deliver his own style to his fans. He also wants to become a Soca music ambassador for Saint Lucia, touring far and wide in the future. “For me it is doing what I love and making people happy and also being an example to other ghetto youth that they can reach for what they believe in and just do it,” Ambi says.
