Chessa
Obeius ended the LIME / SUBWAY National Spelling
Bee with a bang, confidently sounding out
R-E-M-I-N-I-S-C-E to lift the first place
trophy and a bevy of prizes for herself and
her school. Representing District VII, the
fifth-grader earned a cheque of $700 for her
school, Reunion Primary, from SUBWAY. Along
with her trophy from the Ministry of Education,
she copped a value meal voucher from SUBWAY,
and a brand new Lenovo ThinkPad laptop from
LIME, along with 12 months of free Internet
access.
Chessa won from an initial field of over 20
students from all eight educational districts.
The competition involved regional spelling
bees and culminated with the Final on Wednesday
at the National Insurance Corporation’s
Conference Centre in the Francis Compton Building.
“I am excited,” said the champion,
clutching her prizes closely. “None
of the words really gave me any problems,
my teachers helped me prepare and I was very
confident.”
Dania Pierre of Camille Henry Memorial and
District II took second place, winning $600
for her school, a value meal voucher from
SUBWAY, and a Lenovo ThinkCentre all-in-one
desktop computer with six months Internet
access from LIME.

Third
place went to McJaena Joseph of District V,
who earned $500 cheque for Mon Repos Combined,
a value meal voucher from SUBWAY and an Alcatel
OT-808A mobile phone from LIME, with $100
credit.
“This was the most exciting competition
since we began sponsoring the Spelling Bee
in 2009 along with SUBWAY,” said Terry
Finisterre, LIME Corporate Communications
Executive. “It is great to see these
children putting so much effort into this
and really supporting one another, and we
are always pleased to be able to give something
back to the education system and the communities
in which we live and work.”
“We are very grateful to our sponsors,”
said Angela Mariatte, Curriculum Specialist
at the Curriculum and Materials Development
Unit (CAMDU) which organizes the competition
under the auspices of Her Excellency, Governor
General Dame Pearlette Louisy. “These
students are earning real rewards by dint
of their hard work and consistency and we
at CAMDU are very pleased with the support
for this year’s Bee.”
In addition to the prizes for the top three
students, SUBWAY also provided refreshments
for the event and gave each of the finalists
a SUBWAY drawstring bag.
