Youth Doing Something

Big up to Youth Aflame, the Boys Training Centre (BTC) and students from Bexon who volunteered their time and energy on Saturday 2nd April 2011, at the first High Impact Service Day of the campaign - a community clean-up project in Bexon.

Well over 50% of the 250 volunteers who turned up in answer to the call to join the Do Something World (DSW) Saint Lucia campaign where youth! They came from churches, schools, care centres, like the BTC, and from the surrounding community. They helped clean up the bank of the Bexon River, which runs alongside the Bexon Primary School, as well as the school grounds.

The school netball court had been out of commission since Hurricane Tomas, having been covered in silt and debris, which impacted the playtime of the students. The school library was also in a shambles and unusable since the hurricane.

The clean up was so successful that Ms. Carmen Charles, Principal of Bexon Primary School, called the effort a blessing.

“We are so blessed. They did a lot of work for us and provided exactly what we needed. They moved the library for us, transformed the grounds, and we are already using it. Now there is so much more space outdoors where the children can play. We are overjoyed!” commented Charles.

Techla Deterville, DSW Saint Lucia Projects Chairperson described the level of youth involvement as commendable, praising the Boy Training Centre (BTC), the Streams of Power group Youth Aflame and the children from the surrounding neighbourhoods who wielded their cutlasses and pushed wheel barrows for many hours.

The story behind the Do Something World movement is inspiring for young people, as it is a story of achievement, failure and full restoration in the life of its founder, former NFL player, Miles McPherson. Two years into his pro football career, Miles was battling a drug problem and living an immoral lifestyle. That’s when he gave his life to Jesus Christ, and never looked back. Miles began to work as a Bible teacher, youth pastor and speaker with a track record of appealing to diverse audiences, large and small. Today, Miles loves to call people to think about how God has prepared them to do something significant with their lives. He challenges everyone to go out and do something for God!

Appropriately, the BTC is the beneficiary of the next High Impact Service Day (Koudmen) of the Do Something World Saint Lucia campaign. Scheduled for April 30, this next Koudmen will include a mix of both environmental beautification and the launch of sustainable mentoring programmes for the boys of the BTC.
