CCSS SPORTS PROGRAM DISTRICT II FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT
By – Michael Peterkin

The first ever District II Football Tournament organized by the CCSS Sports Program was officially launched on Monday November 7, 2011 at the CCSS grounds. The five schools within District II namely, Sir Ira Simmons, Vide Boutielle Secondary School, Saint Mary’s College, Seventh’s Day Academy and Castries Comprehensive Secondary School were all in attendance. The match past of teams was lead by the matching band from the Seventh Day Academy.

Dignitaries for the opening ceremony included Education Officer for District II, Julian Delauney and the president of the St. Lucia Football Association, Lyndon Cooper who both addressed the gathering. Mr. Delauney and Mr. Cooper both applauded the CCSS Sports Program for the iniative to launch the first ever competition of its kind. The participating five schools received two footballs each from the District II Office and the St. Lucia Football Association.
The Competition takes the form of a round robin tournament and concludes with a semi final and final round. All matches which span from November 7, 2011 to November 29, 2011 will be played at the CCSS grounds, Corinth playing field and the Sab playing Facility. The matches are scheduled to commence at 1:30 p.m. daily.

The first match of the tournament featured the Seventh Day Academy versus the Saint Mary’s College. Despite the muddy and soggy conditions of the pitch both teams demonstrated excellent technical skills. Saint Mary’s College however, executed their tactics as planned which eventually gave the institution a 2 nil victory over their opponents, the Seventh Day Academy. Both goals were scored by Romel Hippolyte one in each half. It must be noted the Seventh Day Academy squandered the most opportunities to score even with a red card issued to Philius James in the second half of the game. This should be of the utmost concern to the coach of the Academy.

One of the major highlights of the tournament will be the most anticipated game between Saint Mary’s College and the Castries Comprehensive Secondary School scheduled for Tuesday November 29th, 2011 at the Sab Playing Facility.
