PAINTBALL
SAINT LUCIA
By Kendell “Scady”
Eugene

The
sporting arena in Saint Lucia is about to
have a new edition to the family. Paintball
is a fast-paced game that has attracted thousands
world wide. The phenomenon has been played
in countries such as the U.S.A and the United
Kingdom and offers players an avenue to compete,
in teams or individually, to eliminate opponents
by tagging them with capsules containing food
colouring and gelatine (referred to as paintballs)
propelled from a device called a paintball
marker (commonly referred to as a paintball
gun). Paintballs have a non-toxic, biodegradable,
water soluble mineraloil. The game is regularly
played at a sporting level with organized
competition involving world-wide leagues,
tournaments, professional teams, and players.
We interviewed one of the founding members
recently to find out what they had in store
for us.
What
is your company called?
Paintball
St. Lucia Ltd.
How
many people make up the company?
The company comprises of two main investors.
Bradford Worrell and Osei Caesar. Brad is
the operations manager and I am the managing
director; however our roles interchange depending
on the companies needs. Our staff comprises
of a front desk lady who is in charge of member
registration, rentals and bookings, a field
supervisor who debriefs players on the rules,
regulations and safety, and a referee who
times the games and ensures the players keep
to the rules and safety requirements of the
field. Also the ref may issue players additional
paintballs if they run out during games.
Why
did you guys decide to go into this business
venture?
Paintball, is one of my favourite sports and
also the favourite of many people in the world
today. St. Lucia has very few action outdoor
sports where people can just go on evenings
or weekends and just have fun. Paintball allows
a fun and safe game that also offers a great
way to learn strategy and teamwork. It allows
one to use their strategic skills in order
to conquer their opponent in ways that no
other sport allows. Paintball is a great game
for young people who aren't into other sports.
I would suggest that parents even encourage
their teens to get into the game if they don't
like the traditional sports. It’s a
great way to get teens away from the television
and outside doing something active. The sport
involves a lot of running and jumping which
is great exercise. Also it allows people to
play a sport with a different feel. I always
envisioned taking the game to a new level
and offering it to the wider public and developing
the sport on a competitive level where tournaments
can be held locally and regionally.
How
can one become a member of Paintball Saint
Lucia?
Becoming a member is as easy as dropping by
our office at Rodney Heights Aquatic Center
and signing up. Being a member offers many
benefits to people who want to play frequently.
They get discounts on equipment and paintballs
and get to use the facility at a reduced rate.

As
a member what are the rules one must adhere
to, to avoid a ban?
The rules which players must adhere to avoid
temporary - permanent bans are:
• Wear masks at all times when in the
arena.
• Do not drink or be under the influence
of any drug and play.
• No blind firing - do not fire the
marker unless you can see what you are firing
at.
• Acknowledge when opponents surrender.
• When masks are not being worn barrel
plugs have to be inserted.
• Conduct yourself as a good sports
man and do not intentional try to cause damage
to other players or yourself.
How many people make up a team and
how many teams are allowed per game?
A team can consist of 2-8 players. Currently
with our field setup we have catered for two
teams but within the next month or so we shall
be able to accommodate 4 separate teams
How long is a game of paintball?
The style of paintball we offer is called
speed ball which can last anywhere from 15
- 30 minutes; however a game can end sooner
depending on the experience and skill of the
players
