W.C.K Rocking Oktoberfest En Kweyol

It’s quickly becoming one of the most anticipated events to open the month of October. Oktoberfest En Kweyol put together by the Windward and Leeward Brewery is in its fourth year and this year’s celebration was set to be one that patrons won’t soon forget. Alongside some of the best acts in St. Lucia, Pringles, Ambi & Mongster, Teddyson John and D.Y.P among others, were specially invited guests from Dominica.
As the commercial hit the airwaves St. Lucians from north to south were ecstatic that the originators of “Bouyon” music, the band WCK of Dominica had been confirmed for the 4th annual Oktoberfest En Kweyol.
Members of the press who had first dibs on the show that was officially launched on Wednesday September 7th gave their approval with a rousing applause. It had been a while since St. Lucia and St. Lucians had jammed to the “Bouyon” rhythm and who knows when there might be another opportunity?
Persons who were not familiar with W.C.K. at Oktoberfest En Kweyol were treated to a fusion of the traditional sounds of Jing ping of Dominica, Cadence-lypso, Zouk and traditional dances like the bele and quadrille. WCK created “Bouyon” which was launched back in the eighties in Dominica.

Formed in 1988, WCK (Windward Caribbean Kulture) reportedly came together to fill a void left by several of Dominica’s most internationally recognized bands such as Exile One and Grammacks, bands that popularized Cadance-Lypso. Building on that foundation, WCK incorporated the more modern jump-up sounds with the drum and conch shell rhythms at the heart of their music- to come up with a refreshingly new sound with lyrics in English and Creole.
Clearly and by judging from fans around Samaans Park, the “Bouyon” style was terribly missed as they sang along to the popular singles which included “Tou cho, Tou Flam”, “Balance Batty”, “Mete Veye”, and “Bouyon” among others. The band promised that their performance would be no warm up to their performance at the Dominica Creole Festival and they lived up to the promise. If they still have enough energy to work Dominicans and the visitors to that island for the music festival, then we definitely need what they are drinking!
Our St. Lucian talent also kept the mammoth crowd moving with their performances. From D.Y.P. who found new life this year with the Soca 2011 contribution “Dumpa Truck” Derek Yarde and company made us relive some of those Apex days with their performance. Superman or Pringles for a minute had parents and grandparents reliving those memorable ring games just before he performed “Getting it Good” and Ambi & Mongster, worked the crowd effortlessly with their singles Glo Ko Ko(Mongster), Matay You(Ambi) and Ma Meley. Teddyson John always a performer to look out for, performed his new single Bumper Shopping much to the delight of a few ladies and gents who were front stage.
