If your mother told
you that you weren’t allowed to use
facebook or create an account would you be
upset? I am sure you would. As a matter of
fact according to the house hold you were
raised in that would call for an all hell
breaking loose moment. Well believe it or
not the First Family in the United States
have put the rule in place in their household.
That’s right! The Obamas, specifically
Michelle Obama has publically expressed that
she isn’t a fan of facebook and she
has discouraged her daughters from creating
an account.
I have no problem with that move and I applauded
her. Quiet frankly I don’t think that
it is a good idea for young children especially
if you are in your early teens to be consumed
by the World Wide Web. I am sure that those
of you who are underage know that facebook
has an age restriction on who can be a member.
Now how many of you have lied about your age
just so you can get an account.
You see many of you have asked us why don’t
we have an account on facebook and to be honest,
we just aren’t old enough for one yet
just like many of you are. But that doesn’t
mean we can’t interact. Of course we
can, we have the great out doors. I enjoy
meeting all new people every time I cover
a school event such as sports, pageants, carnival
and the list goes on and on.
When I checked facebook’s policy on
minors I saw this “Minors. We reserve
the right to add special protections for minors
(such as to provide them with an age-appropriate
experience) and place restrictions on the
ability of adults to share and connect with
minors, recognizing this may provide minors
a more limited experience on Facebook”.
A good move by facebook but it won’t
safe guard a minor who has lied about his
or age. Now some of you young people post
things and then delete it after a scolding
from a friend or because you realized that
you just may have bitten off more than you
could chew. Here is another note I saw under
the “fb” private policy that I
am sure none of us bothered to check out.
“Even after you remove information from
your profile or delete your account, copies
of that information may remain viewable elsewhere
to the extent it has been shared with others,
it was otherwise distributed pursuant to your
privacy settings, or it was copied or stored
by other users.
Always remember this internet users, when
it hits the World Wide Web, it is never private,
it can always be found. What may seem like
an innocent prank, or a picture with friends
may be the beginning of a very bad nightmare
that I am sure you don’t want to have.
There are sick and malicious people who create
fake accounts with evil intentions, so to
you I say be very careful.
Be
safe ya’ll and God bless.
Scady. P
