November
26th 2011
With elections in the
air I was expecting what happened this week
to occur so I wasn’t the least bit surprised
when I didn’t see the big facebook updates
or twitter tweets wishing all our musicians
a Happy Saint Cecilia’s Day. Let me
guess, ya’ll have no clue who she was
and what the holiday is all about. You do?!
Well I am very impressed and you deserve a
pat on your back.
But for the
benefit of those who are still clueless about
the day, listen up, and take note. Saint Cecilia
is the patron saint of musicians and the feast
is celebrated here on the 22nd of November
each year. You see just as we love celebrating
our Carnival and Christmas holidays we shouldn’t
forget days such as Saint Cecilia because
it to plays a very important role in shaping
us as a people.
I often wonder
if this day was like carnival or Christmas
(with two days holiday) would we be so quick
to forget it. As soon as carnival had ended
I saw updates in person’s names with
a countdown for St. Lucia Carnival 2012! Days
such as the one gone on 22nd of November,
in my opinion should be treated with that
same amount of respect and admiration.
Thankfully,
the folks at the Cultural Development Foundation
didn’t forget and extended an invitation
to all of Saint Lucia to join in the observation
of St. Cecilia’s Day on Tuesday. The
day was filled with a variety of live performances
and beats in multiple venues around the island.
The CDF boasted
that starting from 5:30 am on Tuesday 22nd
November, live music and artistes would have
provided music loving fans from all over the
island with a brilliant musical showcase at
various intervals, which included “Three’s
a crowd” at Steve’s Barber Shop/
Peynier Street, Jeremie/ Peynier Street Apex,
“Fourth World Reggae Band” at
Super J/ Vieux Fort.
Live music
filled the air at the Choiseul Fishing Complex
and the sweet sound of steel pan compliments
Harmonites, filled the Mega J Choc complex.
Menasseh Edward/ Solo Pan Jazz performed at
the Serenity Park and Centrik Band jammed
at Williams Baker.
Graham Guard performed at the Hardest Hard
Restaurant/ Bananes and Hildreth Laurencin
filled the Blue Coral with pulsating rhythms
in the early afternoon.
I will be
honest, I didn’t remember the day until
my co-worker Miss Grant brought it to my attention
and I for one am happy she did. I hope all
our musicians had a great Saint Cecilia’s
Day. Take care ya’ll and God bless.
