This weekend my Slouch is going to go down a different route. I know that Rae might have touched on it on her diaries but I would not have a great weekend if I didn’t put my two cents in as well. The amount of insults I saw being posted on facebook about a picture of a friend, sister, woman, and last but not least a Saint Lucian was appalling and down right disrespectful.

We as people must understand the power we have when we type messages, especially negative messages on a social network such as facebook. You see what may seem funny to you may not be as hilarious to someone else. When someone is consistently bombarded by negative criticism by that person will begin to internalize the words and believe them, whether they are true or not.

It can cause the person to have a negative view of themselves, have poor self respect and respect for others, feel insecure about his or her abilities, feel powerless – unable to help themselves and others, and have a lower his sense of self-worth.

What you may not know is that these feelings of self doubt and insecurity will cause someone to withdraw themselves from everything and everyone. They will be less likely to communicate with friends and family. They begin to use lying and not listening as a defence against the negative criticism. They become argumentative and manipulate others and events so that he does not have to take the blame.

The worse I have known to happen is that the person committed suicide just to end the pain. Do you want to be responsible for someone taking their life because of something you said? Because of what you thought was funny? I doubt it. To anyone who has been a victim of such senseless persons, this poem is for you.
