It’s Sports at C.C.S.S.
By Kendell “Scady” Eugene

It is a known fact that physical activity improves overall health. Not only does it improve circulation, increase blood flow to the brain, and raise endorphin levels, which all help to reduce stress, improve mood and attitude, and calm children, physically active students may also achieve more academically. Physically fit students are less likely to miss school, partake in risky behaviours, get involved in gangs, which are all associated with better outcomes in school. Many studies have demonstrated the positive effects of physical education and physical activity on school performance.

Several studies have stated that providing increased time for physical activity can lead to better concentration, reduced disruptive behaviours and higher test scores in reading, math and writing. In an article written by Mackie Shilstone titled The Importance of Physical Education, it was said that “whether you were athletically inclined or not, your overall health benefited from the physical exercise you got in gym class (our P.E. Classes). Those who were athletically inclined often translated their love of physical activity into a lifelong commitment to keeping fit and healthy. Many of them went on to teach Phys Ed to others.”

This is a proven testament and we can see it with all the local names we hear on our sports news. You see it too. You may have had some friends who loved a sport and sticking with it to the end has brought them a tremendous amount of success. Castries Comprehensive Secondary School, are one of the many Secondary Schools on the island that encourage a healthy Physical Education class.

So much so that one of the most anticipated sports meet on the school’s curriculum, brought together students from the various houses Amazona, Finch, Heron and Oriole together in support for their housemates as they went against rival houses in Netball, Football and Basketball.

The day’s event would not just stop with the different sporting activities but also had some added entertainment from Mr. Pringles and M.C. Scady.
