Kobe
Bryant got the Los Angeles Lakers' franchise
scoring record, but the Memphis Grizzlies
spoiled the celebration. Bryant scored 44
points, passing Jerry West as the Lakers'
career scorer, but it wasn't enough as the
Grizzlies got 22 points and 17 rebounds from
Zach Randolph to defeat the Lakers 95-93 on
Monday night. "It's a great honor to
say the least (because) of the great players
that have played here and the tradition we
have,'' Bryant said of becoming the Lakers'
career leading scorer. "
Gilbert
Arenas insists he now understands that "guns
and violence are serious problems, not joking
matters." In an op-ed piece written for
The Washington Post and put on the newspaper's
Web site Monday, the suspended Washington
Wizards guard pledges to be a better role
model and says a "message of nonviolence
will be front and center as I try to rebuild
my relationship with young people in the D.C.
area." He continues: "I know that
won't happen overnight, and that it will happen
only if I show through my actions that I am
truly sorry and have learned from my mistakes.
Egypt
pulled off a historic football feat by beating
Ghana 1-0 on Sunday in the final of the 2010
African Cup of Nations to win the continent's
top prize a record three times in a row, and
a record seven times overall extending back
to the first installment in 1957. After winning
the last two African Cup of Nations in 2006
in Egypt and again in 2008 in Ghana, Egypt
entered this year's competition facing plenty
of skepticism. Many doubted that any team
could pull off three championship wins in
a row, particularly when missing their best
players: Mido, Amr Zaki, Mohamed Barakat,
and Mohamed Abou Treika.
Ottis
Gibson will take over as West Indies coach
in time for the home series against Zimbabwe
later this month. The WICB chief executive
Ernest Hilaire has confirmed reports that
Gibson left his post as England's bowling
coach to take up the vacancy created by the
sacking of John Dyson last year. "Ottis
will begin his appointment from the start
of the home series against Zimbabwe,"
Hilaire said in a CBC Radio interview. "I
think we need to take Ottis' appointment in
stride. He will be the head coach of the WICB,
and not just head coach of the senior team.
He will have responsibility for coaching right
across all of our representative cricket teams.
